Natural Resources Police: Upper Potomac River Hazardous

The Maryland Natural Resources Police have issued a safety advisory for the the Upper Potomac River through Sept. 13.

River levels are hazardous for recreational use on the main stem of the Upper Potomac River from Cumberland, Md., to Little Falls, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

After several days of heavy rain, the NRP has determined the water levels of the Upper Potomac River to pose a safety threat to non white-water recreationists, including tubers and swimmers.

Around Great Falls in Potomac, river water levels are just above seven feet, according to the National Weather Service. The caution stage is at five feet.

The NWS predicts the river will remain at caution stage through Monday morning, as water levels begin to drop. NWS meteorologist Andy Woodcock affirmed the NRP’s advisory that .

His suggestion to boaters and swimmers thinking of taking advantage of high waters:

Woodcock suggested waiting until next weekend to enjoy the river.

The NRP advisory will extend through Sept. 13.
