Grilling out is a big part of Memorial Day weekend, but be sure to practice these safety measure, too.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, and for many local families it means hitting the pool, traveling and even firing up the grill.

In preparation for many of the barbeques this weekend, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue released some safety tips to remember when using the grill.

When it comes to grills, preparation is crucial, said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers in a news release. Every year, thousands of homes catch fire because of improper use of grills, he added.

To stay safe and have fun grilling out this weekend and the rest of the summer, remember these tips:

  • Clean your grill. If you haven’t used your grill in a while, make sure to clean it thoroughly. Leftover residue could lead to a fire.
  • Make sure you grill is in the right place. Position the grill in a well-ventilated, flat and level surface away from your house, overhangs, deck railings, tree branches, shrubbery and anything that can burn, according to the release. The grill should never be used indoors or in a garage.
  • Don’t leave the grill alone. Even if you’re running in the house for minute to grab the hamburger buns, you should never leave the grill alone, according to the release. Be sure to supervise children and pets that could get close to the grill, too.
  • Dress appropriately. Wearing short sleeves is a good idea for the grill master. Close fitting or tightly rolled-up sleeves will also work. Loose clothing can dangle over the grill and catch fire.
  • Let the grill cool. Make sure the barbeque is turned off, and completely cooled before putting the cover back on.
