County Executive Proposes Naming Aquatic Center in Honor of Shrivers

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is proposing to rename the Montgomery Aquatic Center.

The names of the late R. Sargent Shriver and his wife, Eunice Kennedy Shriver will live on throughout the nation as philanthropists, passionate leaders and dedicated parents. Now their names could live on through a local aquatic center, too.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett issued public notice on Wednesday of his proposal to rename the Montgomery Aquatic Center in North Bethesda in honor of the Shrivers, who lived in Potomac for more than two decades.

“Naming this world class aquatic center for the Shrivers would appropriately honor the lives and memory of these two remarkable, community-minded individuals,” Leggett said in a news release on Wednesday. “The Shrivers were avid swimmers and were renowned for opening their home and pool to disabled and disadvantaged children for fun and exercise and for Eunice Shriver’s beloved Special Olympics activities.”
