Where Do You Want to Cast Your Ballot?

Montgomery County will go from five early voting centers to eight or nine, thanks to a new state law.

By Patch Field Editor Whitney Teal

Nearly 78,000 people in Montgomery County preempted 2012's general election to cast their ballot at one of five early voting centers around the county. Thanks to a new election law passed by the Maryland General Assembly this year, a county the size of Montgomery will need to have at least eight centers, with the possibility of a ninth.

Where should the new voting centers be? Currently, early voting centers are at the Silver Spring Civic Center in downtown Silver Spring, Bauer Drive Community Recreation Center and Executive Office Building, both in Rockville, Germantown Community Recreation Center and Marilyn Praisner Community Center in Burtonsville.

Twelve new locations are being considered and county officials want your input. The Board of Elections is holding a public hearing July 27 at 10 a.m. to hear resident testimony. You may also submit ideas in writing for the board to discuss at one of their meetings on Monday, July 29, and Monday, Sept. 16. Email comments to: elections@montgomerycountymd.gov, or mail to the attention of Marjorie Roher at the Montgomery County Board of Elections, 18753 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 210, Gaithersburg, MD 20879.

Proposed locations are in Brookeville, Gaithersburg, Damascus, Bethesda, Potomac, Wheaton and White Oak, in addition to Silver Spring, Rockville, Germantown and Burtonsville. (See a full list of proposed locations in the PDF, attached.)
