Churchill Donates 5300 Cans in Food Drive

Winston Churchill High School has raised nearly 5300 cans of food for the annual food drive at the school.

In a canned food drive, sponsored by the Student Government Association, was a competition between 5th period classrooms that raised nearly 5300 cans of food to help fight hunger in the state.

Every year the State of Maryland runs a canned food drive competition for all schools with Manna Food Bank. Last year, raising over 5000 cans, Churchill was the top school in Montgomery County Public Schools and #5 in the state.

Dr. Benz challenged Churchill students and teachers to beat last year's total at a May awards reception at the State Department Of Education in Baltimore.

Churchill raised almost 5300 cans this year, with collection between Nov. 14 and Dec. 14. The winning 5th period class will have a pizza party sponsored by the SGA as a thank you for their hard work and dedication to helping us end hunger here in Maryland.

The winning class brought in 1385 cans. Churchill's top three teachers were all from social studies, combining for 2994, more than half the school's drive.  

The Churchill SGA has completed other fundraising efforts during homecoming with Pennies for Patients, part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, raising $1,500 in class penny wars. The SGA will also work with the Wounded Warrior Project and Potomac Community Resources later this year.
