Churchill High School Ranks High on National, State, Local Lists of Best High Schools

The Washington Post's 2011 High School Challenge ranked Churchill High School high on several of its lists.

students have another reason to be proud to call themselves Bulldogs after the school ranked high on national, state and local lists of exemplary high schools compiled by The Washington Post in their 2011 High School Challenge.

Churchill ranked no. 98 on The Post’s list of best high schools in the nation, with 24 other Montgomery County Public Schools on the top 100 list. Also in the top 100 are Bethesda-Chevy Chase (59), Richard Montgomery (65), Poolesville (69) and Walter Johnson (82). All MCPS high schools are among the top 1,000 on the national list.

Also, Churchill ranked no. 10 out of 170 public schools in the Washington, D.C., metro area. The school fell two places since it ranked no. 8 in the 2010 High School Challenge. All MCPS high schools are in the top 100 regionally.

Churchill ranked no. 6 on the list of high schools in Maryland. Seven other MCPS high schools are in the top ten ranked schools in the state.

Washington Post education reporter Jay Matthews has conducted the ranking since 1998. But Matthews expanded the list to the entire country for the first time this year. According to the Post website, schools are measured using a formula analyzing college level tests taken by graduating seniors.

In a press release, MCPS superintendent Dr. Jerry Weast said he was proud of the schools' performances. 

“These results reflect the continuing commitment of the Board of Education to providing all students with access to college-level work so that they are better prepared for college and the workforce," Weast said.
