Churchill Swimmers and Divers Shine at State Meet

Twenty-two of the state swimming titles were won by Montgomery County students.

Winston Churchill High School swimmers put in a good showing at the Maryland 4A/3A swimming and diving championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center, Reach for the Wall reported.

Twenty-two of the state titles were won by Montgomery County students.

From Winston Churchill High School, the team of Steve GeKevin GuHarrison Gu and Austin Cole broke the state record in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:27.51. "The same four boys won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:13.92," Reach for the Wall reported.

Churchill senior Michelle Illig won the girls’ 50-yard freestyle in 24.42, and Mashal Hashem won the girls’ diving event with 401.10 points. "Churchill sophomore Kali Becker—the defending state [diving] champion and 2013 Metros champion—failed a dive, but still managed to finish third overall with 374.95 points," Reach for the Wall added.
