German School Celebrates 50 Years With A Weekend Of Festivities

The German School Washington kicked-off a weekend of festivities with an opening ceremony of music and congratulatory remarks followed by an afternoon of games, food and champagne.

The celebrated its 50th anniversary with a weekend of festivities.

The school offers a bi-lingual education in German and English for students in pre-school through 12th grade, and students graduate with a German Abitur and a Maryland High School diploma. Students include children from German diplomats and business people living in the D.C.-area as well as anyone wanting to immerse their children in German culture. According to Waldemar Gries, head of school, 32 countries are represented in a student body of more than 600. The German School Washington is the largest of the German Schools the United States.

The school’s assembly hall was standing room only as an all-star lineup of dignitaries offered congratulations.

Headmaster Gries introduced Peter Ammon, the recently appointed German ambassador to the United States, Anne Marie Chrétien, the school founder, and a group of teachers who have served the school for 30 years or more. A short history of the school was given by Peter Dreher, English teacher and editor of a book on the history of the school. Dreher also introduced past headmasters and headmasters of the other German Schools across the US.
