Potomac Students To Join County in Walking To School

Wayside Elementary School will participate in International Walk to School Day.

Are you lacing up those tennis shoes for International Walk to School Day tomorrow?

Potomac’s is one of many county schools participating in Walk to School Day this year. On Wednesday, students and teachers will assemble at meeting points and walk to school together, according to Wayside staff development teacher, Jill Costa.

Around 8:45 a.m. tomorrow, staff will leave the school to meet students and parents at check points around the school, and at 9 a.m. all participants will converge on Wayside in an ambulatory mass. Thirty teachers and staff members will be out to meet students and parents in the school’s third year of participation in the event, Costa said.

“I think it’s exciting,” Costa said. “It’s a great way to get kids out and moving.”

For those unable to participate, buses will be running on a normal schedule.

According to the International Walk to School Day website, the event was first proposed to bring together community leaders and children to create awareness of the need for communities to be walkable. Today, walkers all over the country will be stretching their legs for a variety of reasons, from bringing awareness to childhood obesity to promoting cleaner air and school safety. For this year’s event, over 3,500 schools have registered to participate in the United States.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and Superintendent Joshua Starr will also participate in Walk to School Day with a morning event at . The county event will start with a group walk and end with an assembly for children to teach them how to cross streets safely.
