Big Train Baseball Scouts For Host Families

If yours is a baseball family, Bethesda-based Big Train Baseball may have a program right up your alley.

Is Junior looking for a little extra batting practice? Do you have an empty bedroom in your house begging for an occupant?

The Bethesda Big Train Baseball team is looking for a few local host families to take in players during June and July. The summer collegiate team that plays at Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Park will bring 25 ball players from around the country to the Bethesda-Potomac region this year. In addition to playing on the Big Train team, many of these players will be camp counselors for the program's summer baseball camp. According to the Big Train program, hosting a player could also mean a bit more one-on-one attention for your young camper.

"For middle and high school players, hosting a Big Train player offers an up-close look at the drive, talent and commitment it takes to play collegiate ball," according to a program release.

Families that host players will receive a family season pass to the Shirely Povich Field, discounts on Big Train baseball camp and a "first priority" place in the Big Train bat boy program.

The Bethesda Big Train team plays in the Cal Ripken League, with teams from Rockville, Silver Spring-Takoma Park, College Park and Virginia. Pre-season scrimmages start on Saturday, June 2. Opening night is Friday, June 8, and the season closes Thursday, July 26.

If you’re interested in hosting, contact host family coordinator Jami Deise at 301-379-9145 or email JamiDeise@aol.com.
