Potomac Athlete to Watch: Churchill Wrestler Wesley Deaver

Deaver making a big impact on the mats for Bulldogs.

The Montgomery County regional wrestling championships are fast approaching and the wrestling team's best hope for success may come in the relatively tiny frame of 112-pounder Wesley Deaver.

Deaver is ranked in the top five of county wrestlers in his weight class and as a senior, he'd like nothing more than to make his final high school wrestling season special.

"I'm gonna work harder now than I ever have before," Deaver said. "I want to go out with a bang."

Last Saturday against Blake, Deaver dominated opponent Ray Burgos with a pin, one of just three individual match wins for the Bulldogs at the meet.

It's been a difficult season for the Churchill team as a whole. The controversial firing and eventual reinstatement of coach Brandon Shapiro didn't help matters.

Deaver, though, was enthusiastic about the Bulldogs chances at Regionals, and appreciative of his time with Shapiro. In 2002 and 2003, Shapiro won the 119-pound state wrestling title for the Bulldogs.

"I definitely hope to help us try to win regionals and then hopefully place in states," Deaver said.

"This is the last time I get to do this."
