Senior Players Championship Draws Local Fans on First Day of Tournament

Golf fans from around the area made their way to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm on Thursday for the Senior Players Championship's first day of play.

The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship began on Thursday, Oct. 7 and brought fans from around the area to watch the PGA TOUR's Champion Tour for professional golfers ages 50 and older.

Many people came to the tournament taking place at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm because of the free admission that the tournament offered, while others came because they won tickets to preferred seating areas.

Nicks Cornwell and Jamie Cornwell decided to come to Thursday's tournament when they won tickets to the preferred seating area on the radio.  The brothers from Frederick, Md., said they would only attend the four-day tournament on Thursday because of their work schedules.

"We really came to see Freddie Couples," Nick said. "We're happy to be here on the course and enjoy the beautiful weather."

A group of friends from Crystal City, Va., also won tickets to the preferred seating area through an auction. Joan Jordano, who won the tickets, said she is only attending the tournament on Thursday even though admission is free until Sunday, Oct. 10.

"We are having fun and enjoying the course — it is the first time I've ever been here," Jordano said. "I don't know much about golf so I am learning as much as I can."

Jim Juras, a participant is Wednesday's Accenture Championship Pro-Am held at the course, stuck around Thursday with his friend and caddy, Paul Benoit to watch his Pro-am partner Larry Mize compete.

"I think offering the free tickets is a great way to bring in more people," Juras said. "I think the tournament will draw well on the weekend and have a lot better turnout."
