Here Come the Funnel Cakes: Maryland Summer Fair Season

From fried Oreos to prize heifers, check out some of the best fairs and festivals in Maryland coming up in August.

August approaches, and with it comes fair season. Check out some of the great fairs and festivals going on this month throughout Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

Featuring over 40 rides, all your favorite carnival foods (think "fried Oreos") and tons of contests and exhibits, the annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair has something for everyone. The fair will take place on Chestnut Street in Gaithersburg from Aug. 10 through 18, and tickets are $10, but if you happen to be 11 years old or younger, admission is free.

Prince George’s County Fair

Where can you go to see a beautiful baby contest, a chain saw artist and pig and duck races, all in the same place? The Prince George’s County Fair features all of these events, along with plenty more, from Sept. 6 to 9. Admission is $6 for ages 12 and over, $5 for ages 6 to 11 and free for ages 5 and under.

FestAfrica

The 10th Annual African Festival for the State of Maryland is open Aug. 11 and 12 in downtown Silver Spring. From 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Veterans Plaza, explore African culture through a variety of cultural foods, music and dance, vendors, games and exhibits. Admission is free.

Chesapeake Crab and Beer Fest

On Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. on the National Harbor Waterfront, you get an all-you-can-eat-and-drink experience, with crabs, beer, live music, arts and crafts and other entertainment. The Crab and Beer Festival is a pricier event (the cheapest packages run from $35 to $89, while the most expensive ones cost up to $1,600), so come hungry (and thirsty) for a day of crabs, beer and outdoor fun.

If you're in the mood to do some traveling, there are plenty of opportunities to venture outside Prince George's and Montgomery counties -- plan a day trip to check out some of these Maryland fairs from the :

Maryland State Fair:  We can't not mention the event packaged as the "11 Best Days of Summer." The fair runs from Aug. 24 through Sept. 3 at the Timonium Fairgrounds and includes the traditional midway, food, games and exhibits, along with performances from Newsboys, The Afters, Victoria Justice and The Band Perry.

Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair: The Carroll County fair, held from July 28 to Aug. 3 in Westminster, includes more farm exhibits. Want to bring the kids up close and personal with pigs, goats and cattle? Here's where to go. The fair also includes pig racing, lawnmower racing and a demolition derby.

Harford County Fair: The 25th annual fair is this weekend in Bel Air. Events include a tractor pull, talent competition, food and wine "fiesta" and a marionette show.

Howard County Fair: Howard County's event runs from Aug. 4 through 11 and includes rides, games, pig races and a bingo hall.
