State, Local Police Target Reckless Driving Through Fourth of July Holiday

Stay alert for aggressive drivers and motorists driving under the influence during the Fourth of July holiday period, and the extra police presence deployed to handle reckless driving. 

The official holiday is Wednesday, but Maryland State Troopers will begin an increased traffic enforcement initiative this weekend to reduce traffic incidents statewide. 
 
Each of the 22 Maryland State Police barrack commanders will deploy special drunk driving patrols, as well as speeding and aggressive driving patrols, that will continue throughout the Fourth of July holiday. State officers also will be assigned additional traffic enforcement patrols when not responding to calls for other services. Drivers can expect to see traffic enforcement efforts by troopers underway wherever they travel throughout Maryland, state police said.

In addition to state police patrols, the Montgomery County Police Department and other metro-area departments will launch the second wave of its from June 29 through July 7. Smooth Operator specifically targets aggressive driving.

“We are prepared to meet the demands of increased traffic and increased highway hazards with extra troopers and focused patrols aimed at keeping motorists on our highways safe,” said Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown. “I urge everyone traveling this holiday not to drink and drive, to obey the speed limits and always buckle up.”
