Potomac Village Farmers Market: At The Market This Week Aug. 9

A weekly guide to what's new at the Potomac Village Farmer's Market each Thursday

Many people are somewhat familiar with the basics of farming even if they’ve never dug whole in dirt or planted a seed in soil. The occasional neighborhood tomato grower extraordinaire notwithstanding, most of our perception comes from a variety of sources including childhood books (Old McDonalds Farm), elementary school science classes (who didn’t sprout a bean in a cup), best seller books (Omnivores Dilemma),  Hollywood big screen movies (The Wizard of Oz, Grapes of Wrath, Field of Dreams) or eye-opening documentaries (Food Inc.).

However interesting and entertaining these glimpses of farmtopia are, most of us don’t have a clue about what’s involved with bringing our favorite tomato or apple to market. For instance, did you know that it takes about three or four years for a newly bought two-year-old apple tree to produce fruit, where as if you plant it from seed it will take six to 10 years? (source Answers.com)

This is the first of a small series of writings dedicated to providing you insights into the day of a farmer, the tools of the trade, the regulations, and the trials and triumphs of some of your favorite Potomac Village Farmers Market Farmers.
