Farmers markets have been a way for farmers and producers to connect with communities for over a hundred years (even longer in Europe and other cultures). The French Market, one of the oldest in the US is located in New Orleans. It started as an Indian trading post! Over the decades, in response to community needs and changes in political tides, it eventually gave rise to a market that more closely resembles our modern-day Farmers Market. A place where farmers sell produce, meats, poultry, farm products, flowers, etc. to home cooks, health conscious consumers, local chefs, restaurant owners, travelers and residents alike.
is older than it appears, too! Its roots run over 16 years deep and can be traced to its original location on River Road near the . In 2010, in response to community desires for greater accessibility and vendor selection, it was moved to its current location on Falls Road near South Glen, making it one of the oldest continuously operating markets in Montgomery County!

Since its inception, an ever increasing number of farmers markets have been sprouting up all over the county and country. In 2011, there were over 20 in Montgomery County each with its own community feel. In acknowledgement of the value farmers markets provide to the local economy and community, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently proclaimed August 5th – 11th, 2012 as National Farmers Market week.
So come on out and celebrate the history of farmers markets with PVFM farmers Corey of McCleaf’s, Ali of Aliabbad, Anna of Rocklands and Carol of Plantmasters. See you Thursday!
