Potomac residents support community service event organized by Winston Churchill High School students
More than 130 people participated in a five kilometer race to raise funds for recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Potomac. Winston Churchill High School's Key Club organized The Capital Area Gulf Coast Relief Run to benefit the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. The Key Club is the high school branch of Kiwanis International. Key Club members, who seek to build leadership skills through service projects and community involvement, decided to take action to help the relief efforts in the Gulf Coast last spring shortly after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. "The devastation that the Gulf Coast region has experienced in recent years is phenomenal," said Ben Kramer, a senior at Churchill who …

Gulf Coast Relief Run 5K & Fun Run sponsored by Churchill's Key Club will take place on Sunday, Oct. 3.
Last spring's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico dominated the headlines for months. On Sunday, Oct. 3 Churchill High School's Key Club, the high school branch of Kiwanis International, will present the Capital Area Gulf Coast Relief Run – a 5k run/walk to benefit the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. The second annual Bubba's Belly Run attracted many runners and military supporters.
Update Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1:30 p.m.: Even though not all of the donations have been counted, it seems as if Bubba's Belly Run did not raise as much money as race organizer, Nicki Bunting would have hoped. The 5K race, which took place Sunday, Sept. 26, raised about $40,000 this year and had about 650 participants, Bunting said. Last year, the event's inaugural race drew more than 800 participants and raised more than $56,000. "Not at all my goal as it's significantly less than last year, but I'm still pleased and know the money will be used for great things," Bunting said in an e-mail. The money will go to a fund established by Bunting to help families who have lost loved ones in war. A portion of this year's proceeds will also be …

Bubba's Belly Run is hosting its second annual 5K race on Sept. 26.
As any frustrated motorist who has lost his way winding through a seemingly endless road detour will tell you, there is no shortage of marathons in the Washington, D.C. area during the fall months. But the second annual Bubba's Belly Run, which will take place at the Bullis School in Potomac on Sunday, Sept. 26, has a very personal story behind it. "I wanted to do something to remember my husband and have the public come out in memory of him," said Nicki Bunting, who organizes the run. "I also wanted to raise some money for organizations that have helped me and friends that are in the same position as us." Nicki Bunting's husband, Army Captain Brian "Bubba" Bunting, was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan on February 24, 2009 — only …
