Former Arlington Road Post Office Set to Be Demolished

A five-story building with 140 residential units and retail is planned for the Bethesda site.

A demolition permit for the former post office at 7001 Arlington Rd. in Bethesda was issued this month, according to Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center director Ken Hartman. Plans for a five-story, mixed-use residential and retail building on the site were approved in November. A building permit for the development is in the works, Hartman said. The news was first reported by Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer. The U. S. Postal Service closed the two former downtown Bethesda offices at Arlington Road and Wisconsin Avenue and opened a new retail location last year. The move was part of a nationwide effort by USPS to consolidate or close post offices in the face of declining revenues. The postal service faced pushback over parking at …

The restaurant that is planned to take over the second floor and roof deck of a new Woodmont Triangle commercial building has been dubbed “Roof,” and it could be open by July. “What we’re trying to accomplish is a nice rooftop dining atmosphere that transitions into a happening night spot in the evenings,” Tommy Joe’s owner Alan Pohoryles, who is behind the new restaurant, said to Patch. Renovations and additions to an existing commercial building at Norfolk and Cordell avenues are underway. Check out an animation of the concept for the new space via Steven J. Karr, AIA Inc. Letter to the Editor: The 60-Year Story Of Bruce Variety Ends

Jennifer Kelly shares her thoughts on the closure of Arlington Road's Bruce Variety store.

By Jennifer Kelly There is rumor that has made its way from Bethesda, Maryland to Denver – and probably beyond – in less than a week. The news affects people from three or four generations. It has traveled by Facebook and email and texts. It has been on the local news. And it is triggering emotions from panic to nostalgia. Bruce Variety is closing. According to a DC local news report, the sign went up the day after Christmas. Everything half off. The rent is just too high. Remember when Bethesda was just a small town? There was Baskin-Robbins next to the A&P, the Chinese food place, the Bethesda Crab House, and Montgomery Donuts. Not much more within walking distance… except for that small strip of stores on Arlington Road that housed “…

Did the Baskin Robbins operate at the same time as the A&P? I thought Baskin Robbins opened in that location after the A&P closed and the Giant Pharmacy (RIP) opened in its place.   more ›

Trader Joe's Recalls Peanut Butter Over Salmonella Concerns

DC-area stores take one house brand off the shelves and offer refunds.

Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of one type of its house brand peanut butter over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the Monrovia-based specialty grocery chain said to City News Service, a southern California based wire service. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” the company stated to City News Service. But the food should not be eaten “pending health-related inquiries.” Trader Joe’s has several locations in the area, including Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Foggy Bottom. In advance of this recall, Trader Joe’s removed the product from all store shelves. …

Crime Roundup: Mom, Teen Nearly Seriously Injured, Police Search Out Counterfeit Suspects

Just because it didn't happen in Potomac, doesn't mean you don't want to know about it.

It’s been a busy week for crime around Potomac, though inside of ZIP 20854 things have stayed relatively quiet.  Montgomery County Police are still looking for the driver of a minivan that struck Jodi Grant, 44, then drove off and left the woman unconscious and bleeding with injuries including a broken neck, broken back and broken nose. She was returning from a bike ride to Great Falls in Potomac and was about five minutes from her home when a van in the left lane veered into the where she was riding, Bethesda Patch reported. “As a mom of two girls I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that I could have easily been killed in the flash of a second,” Grant told Patch in an email.  Nicole Polen, a junior this year at Gaithersburg High…

SPEAK OUT: What Did You Think of the Olympics Closing Ceremony?

Are you sad to see the Olympics go? What did you think of the closing ceremony?

The 2012 Summer Olympics officially ended last night with memorable performances from The Who, George Michael and of course, a Spice Girls reunion. Olympians have returned home – some, like Bethesda swimmer Katie Ledecky, with gold medals.  Other Montgomery County Olympians, like rhythmic gymnast Julie Zetlin and Darnestown kayaker Caroline Queen, may not have taken home a medal, but they still made Olympic history in their own ways. Zetlin, another Bethesda native, was the first U.S. rhythmic athlete to compete at the Olympics since 2004 and the only American in this year’s competition. Queen wrote in a personal essay that though she wished she had finished better, she was still honored to compete in the games.   Overall the U.S. had a …
