The historic theater building in which the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club recently opened turns 75 this year. To celebrate the supper club's March 1 opening and the building's 75th birthday, a "Grand Re-Opening" ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. on May 17. After the ceremony, reception, cocktails and dinner (at 7:15 p.m.), jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis will take the stage at 8:30 p.m., according to a news release from the venue. A media event is set for Tuesday ahead of the March 1 opening of the much-anticipated music venue.
The media will get a sneak peek of Bethesda's newest music venue Tuesday morning. A press event is set to mark the launch of the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club, a music club that will open March 1 in the former Bethesda Theatre space. Blues, jazz, comedy and country acts will take the stage and Chef Scott Mullen will serve up Louisiana-style cuisine. The Bethesda Theatre, a Wisconsin Avenue landmark, opened in 1938 as an art deco movie house. In 2007, it became an off-Broadway performance hub following a renovation by the Bozutto Group. The supper club that's set to take over the former Bethesda Theatre space will debut in March, and a new chef will be heading up the kitchen when the doors open, Bethesda Magazine reports. The Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club will open its doors March 1, according to the report. Owners have brought in Chef Scott Mullen, who was named by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the city’s “Top 25 Up and Coming Chefs” when he cooked in upscale kitchens there. Mullen will still serve up the Louisiana cuisine that was part of the original vision for the supper club, but will also include shrimp scampi, prime rib and crab cakes on his menu, according to the report.
