Barclay will serve as vice president.
Shirley Brandman was elected Montgomery County Board of Education president Wednesday, replacing Christopher Barclay, who will serve as vice president. The board voted unanimously for the two at its meeting, and their one-year terms begin immediately. Brandman, who also served as president in 2008, said she plans to work with the board and Superintendent Joshua Starr to ensure a quality education for all Montgomery students. The District 2 representative will leave after first term.
Board of Education member Laura Berthiaume will not seek re-election in 2012, the Parents' Coalition of Montgomery County reported. Berthiaume of Rockville, told the Gazette she wants to spend more time with her three children, which had been difficult to do along with her duties on the board. She represents District 2, which includes the Rockville, Richard Montgomery, Wootton, Winston Churchill and Northwest clusters. Berthiaume said Montgomery County Public Schools' recently approved school redistricting, which would reduce the size of District 2, did not factor into her decision. County will not make a decision on Nick Maravell's request for a licensing extension due to litigation issues.
The application to extend a license for Nick's Organic Farm to continue farming along Brickyard Road for another year has been recused by the Office of the County Attorney of Montgomery County, according to a statement released by farm owner Nick Maravell. "The County is saying it can’t extend my farming activity,” Maravell said in the release. “In my view, it’s because the County is not confident it has legal control over the property.” In a Sept. 2 letter to Maravell's attorney, James L. Parsons, Jr., the County responded to a lawsuit filed on July 22 by Maravell against the Montgomery County Board of Education. Members of the Board of Education, some County Council members and Superintendent Jerry Weast discussed priorities for dealing with the operating budget in fiscal year 2012.
Patience will be crucial to Montgomery County Public Schools in the coming months as the district anticipates how to tackle budget woes and accommodate more than 3,300 new students, said Jerry Weast at the annual operating budget meeting hosted by the Montgomery County Council of PTAs on Monday evening. "We don't know how bad it is or how bad it's going to be," Weast said. "We will do everything we can to minimize damage, but there will be damage." Weast, school board members and several Montgomery County Council members explained their priorities and plans for the fiscal year 2012 operating budget, which Weast proposed to be $2.16 billion in December. Looking for a new job? Montgomery County Public Schools has a big one open, but they haven't simply put it up on Craiglist. Shortly after announcing that school system would be working with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to recruit a new superintendent, the Board of Education also set up separate section of the main county schools' website for the search. HYA was the search firm that helped hire current superintendent Jerry Weast. The site is designed for both community members and potential candidates, although the job listing is not available. With final numbers reported, the board sees no changes in members.
All four incumbents for the Montgomery County Board of Education beat out their challengers, with all 248 precincts reporting. Each of the four challengers trailed behind the winners by several thousand votes, with the closest race between the District 5 candidates. Martha Schaerr tried to take down incumbent Michael Durso, who's served on the board since his appointment in 2009. In the end, Durso garnered 58.12 percent of the vote, to Schaerr's 41.49 percent. Challenger Schaerr had the strongest campaign presence at the polls, with many supporters handing out literature at polling places around Wheaton, Glenmont and Kemp Mill. On Nov. 2, residents of Montgomery County will be able to vote for candidates for Districts 1, 3 and 5 and at-large for the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education. Despite what district voters lives in, they will be able to vote for the open seats in all districts and the at-large candidates. The at-large seat represents the interests of residents countywide. The League of Women Voters and Friends of the Library are hosting a Board of Education Candidates Forum Monday evening.
Many candidates for the Montgomery County Board of Education will be discussing their ideas for local public schools at a candidates forum, which will take place Monday evening. Twelve candidates for the eight-member Board of Education will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rockville Memorial Library, 21 Maryland Ave. in Rockville, to discuss their contributions to the board if elected.
