Churchill Advances to First Regional Final in 33 Years

Churchill defeats Gaithersburg 53-45.

Winston Churchill High School's seven seniors have been to several MPSSAA 4A West Regional Finals in the last few years. But each time they went before, they had to buy a ticket at the door. "We went last year after a disappointing loss to Magruder in the semifinals," said senior forward Thomas Geenen. "It was painful to watch the other teams play, especially for our seniors who had played their last game. But while we were there we all made a vow that this year we had to come back and find a way to play in this game not just for us but for all the guys we have had the chance to play with over the past three years." Indeed, this year the Bulldogs won't be spectators but will be playing in the regional championship thanks to a 53-45 …

Churchill Has a Senior Moment

Bulldogs defeat Watkins Mill 59-52 for 17th Victory.

The seniors on the Winston Churchill High School boys basketball team added yet another milestone to its legacy as one of the strongest classes to ever play boys basketball at Churchill with a victory over Watkins Mill Friday evening, 59-52, on Senior Night. The win marked the 45th win for the class of 2012 during their three-year career against just 23 losses, most of which came during their sophomore year. They have also won back-to-back division championships.  “This night was all about the seniors and their great contributions to our program,” Churchill head coach Matt Miller commented following the game. “I can’t say enough about this group of seniors, many of whom played three years of varsity basketball and had to take their lumps …

Churchill Makes Division Champ

Bulldogs capture division title with 49-41 win over Richard Montgomery.

After a 32 year drought, Winston Churchill High School earned a long-awaited division championship in 2010-11. The seven juniors on that team (now seniors) enjoyed that feeling so much they weren't about to let even a year go by without winning another division title. As a result, the Bulldogs' boys basketball team, now riding a seven game winning streak, clinched the Montgomery County 4A South division crown with a hard-fought 49-41 win over Richard Montgomery on Monday night. The victory was the Bulldogs’ 11th win in their last 12 games as they improved to 8-1 in the Montgomery County 4A South Division, two games ahead of Walter Johnson with one division game to play against the second-place Wildcats on Wednesday night at Churchill. …

Churchill Passes County 4A South Division Test

Bulldogs Defeat B-CC Barons 70-51

Following a stressful semester exam week, the Winston Churchill High School Boys varsity basketball team was looking for a little extra credit in the Montgomery County 4A South Division. So the Bulldogs decided to apply some defensive lessons learned earlier this season leading to a 70-51 victory over Bethesda-Chevy Chase on Friday evening.  Churchill never looked back from a 25-point second quarter that broke open a one-point game en route to earning its tenth victory of the season (10-3 overall) and a two-game lead in the Montgomery County 4A South Division race with a 5-1 record. After a sluggish first quarter, the Bulldogs found their mojo in the second quarter behind the efforts of senior forward Thomas Geenen (8 points and nine …

Churchill Wallops Richard Montgomery, 64-30

Bulldogs have recorded their 50th win under four-year coach Matt Miller.

The Winston Churchill High School boys varsity basketball team used a stingy defense and its best shooting of the season to wallop visiting Richard Montgomery, 64-30, on Tuesday night. The win improved the Bulldogs’ overall record to 8-3 and 3-1 in the Montgomery 4A South Division, where they remain tied for the lead with Wootton. The Bulldogs focused their defense on the Rockets’ Justin Senou, who came into the game as one of the metropolitan area’s top scorers (22 points-per-game average). Guarded mostly by junior Dominique Williams, Senou managed just three points and six shots. Williams’ teammates got the job done too as they limited the visitors to just 12-of-46 shooting from the floor (26%). “Dom’s job was to lock [Senou] up, deny …

Churchill Defeats Shaler 51-47 to Win Holiday Tournament

Bulldogs Overcome Slow Start to Defeat Titans

In the beginning of Wednesday's Bobby Miller Bulldog Holiday Classic Championship match-up, the Winston Churchill Bulldogs appeared to be more than hospitable hosts spotting the Shaler Area (PA) Titans a 13-2 lead with just over four minutes gone in the first quarter. But down 13-2, Churchill suddenly re-discovered its defensive intensity and carried that energy to a 51-47 come from behind victory to earn the tournament championship. For Churchill, it was the Bulldogs' second consecutive Bobby Miller Bulldog Holiday Classic title after narrowly missing a championship in 2009 with an overtime loss. Coming into the game, the Bulldogs knew that Shaler from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area would be a well-coached, talented and disciplined …
