Bullis Senior Remembered for Humor, Strength, Smile

Though Cami Baruch suffered from ulcerative colitis, the cause of her sudden death remains unclear.

The cause of death remains undetermined for Bullis senior Camille Baruch, who died suddenly last weekend at her home in Rockville. The 19-year-old excelled at her schoolwork even though she missed many school days due to her struggle with ulcerative colitis, which caused her to undergo several surgeries, including one that removed her large intestine, family said. Despite her condition, family said that Baruch was healthy, going out with friends and attending school immediately before her death. She had recently applied to colleges and was hoping for an acceptance letter from Cornell, where her older brother attends school. Baruch’s mother Annette said that her daughter, known to friends as Cami, had visited the doctor Friday morning after…

Bullis Names New Girls’ Basketball Coach

Rod Hairston comes to Bullis with five consecutive 4A titles under his belt.

Bullis School announces the appointment of Rod Hairston as new head coach of the school’s girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball programs. He takes the place of Kira Orr, former head coach who recently stepped down to focus on her academic and administrative duties as dean of the Bullis Middle School.          “Kira had tremendous success with the basketball program, as evidenced by this season’s tremendous 20-7 record,” said Dr. Gerald L. Boarman, head of school. “She leaves big shoes to fill in the athletic program, but we are confident that Rod’s success demonstrates that he is up for the charge.” Hairston is the first coach in Maryland to win five consecutive state 4A titles 2005-2009, which he accomplished while head coach of …

Bullis Arts Program Raises $23K for Stepping Stones Shelter

Stepping Stones Shelter and Bullis Arts Program benefit from the fundraising run.

The third annual Bullis Gives Back 5K run and 2.5K walk was one for the record books. The May 15 event at Bullis School raised $23,000 for Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, nearly doubling last year’s proceeds of $12,000. Also, the event brought 340 participants and more than 100 volunteers, said Nikki DePandi, who co-chaired the Bullis Gives Back event. “We were thrilled with the turnout, but our happiest moment was when we realized the amount of the funds we raised for Stepping Stones Shelter,” DePandi said. The money will allow Stepping Stones Shelter to support its emergency/assessment housing program and the HOPE Housing Program — two initiatives that help provide shelter, food and counseling to those in need, said Executive …

Each year the Bullis School community comes together to fill and assemble Thanksgiving baskets for families in need.

The baskets include items like food, silverware, decorations, pies, artwork and cards — all contributions from the Bullis community. On Nov. 23, the baskets are distributed to families through Interfaith Works and the Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission. "This is a great event," said Susie Zimmermann, Communications Manager at Bullis School.  "It's something our entire community gets involved in."  The project, which has been a Bullis tradition for more than 15 years, is a school-wide effort where the Lower School …
