It’s the second Friday of the month, so that means downtown Bethesda art galleries will keep their doors open late for the Bethesda Art Walk. Participating galleries will showcase local, national and international artwork in a variety of media from 6-9 p.m. This month’s Art Walk will be held in conjunction with an opening reception for the Trawick Prize 10th Anniversary Exhibition at Gallery B. Baltimore artist Jo Smail has taken home the Sapphire Award and $10,000 after being named the “best of the best” of Trawick Prize winners over the past 10 years. The Trawick Prize is an annual juried contemporary art competition, founded by Bethesda community activist and philanthropist Carol Trawick in 2003. To celebrate the competition’s 10th anniversary, a special group exhibition is underway at Gallery B to showcase the work of the artists who have taken "Best in Show" for the past 10 years. Eight finalists have been announced for the 2012 Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards, a regional visual art competition established in 2003 by Bethesda community activist and philanthropist Carol Trawick. The Bethesda Urban Partnership and the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District will unveil the work of the finalists, hailing from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, during a September group exhibition at Gallery B. The winners are set to be announced on Sept. 5. The top prize winner will receive $10,000, with the second place winner receiving $2,000 and the third place winner receiving $1,000.
