Macy's Collects Santa Letters For Make-A-Wish Donation

Macy's will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, up to $1 million, for every Santa letter dropped at the Westfield Montgomery Mall store.

If only it were possible to help make the world a better place with just our greedy, materialistic thoughts. Apparently it is. The 5th year of Macy's Believe Holiday Campaign benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation is in full swing, allowing children of all ages to trade in Santa letters in exchange for $1 donations to the charity. Children of all ages can bring a stamped Santa wish letter to the Westfield Montgomery Mall Macy’s, addressed to Santa at the North Pole, and drop it into the Macy’s Santa Mail Letterbox. For each letter received, from now umtil Dec. 24, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish up to $1 million, according to a recent blog post on Patch. Are Potomac's Top Earners Also Tightfisted?

A study released by the Chronicle of Philanthropy shows that middle-class income earners donate a higher percentage of their discretionary incomes than top earners.

  Are Potomac residents tightfisted charity-givers, compared to the rest of the country? In a story published Monday, Patch reported that Maryland and Potomac residents donate a large amount of money to charities compared to other places. But another look at the numbers shows that residents may not be as generous as we'd like to think. Marylanders donate on average 5.7 percent of their discretionary incomes, according to an analysis released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Tax records from 2008, the most recent year for which IRS data is available, show that Potomac’s charitable giving comes in below the state average at around 4.4 percent of discretionary income or $8,695, according to the study’s analytics map. Maryland Ranks High in Charitable Giving

Potomac residents, however, donate a smaller percentage of income to charity than the average state resident.

Maryland ranks 11th in the nation in terms of how much its residents donate of their discretionary income to charity, according to an analysis released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Utah was listed as the top state, with residents on average giving 10.6 percent of their discretionary income to charity. In Maryland, people give on average 5.7 percent of discretionary income, according to the analysis, based on IRS records. Potomac's total contributions to charity came in at $139.7 million for 2008, the most recent year for which IRS data was available, but residents donate a smaller percentage of their income than the state’s average.
