Cold Weather Isn't Crepe Weather?

Freezing temperatures have caused Rita's Crepes to close temporarily.

Rita's Crepes has shuttered temporarily, according to a notice posted on the popular Bethesda Row crepe stand at Bethesda and Woodmont avenues. Consistent freezing temperatures have caused the stand's water lines to malfunction, according to the sign. "We will be back when things change," read the notice. The sign encouraged patrons to visit Rita's Crepes at the Bethesda Central Farm Market, held Sundays at Bethesda Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The kiosk, run by Annandale resident Rita Douglass, has been serving up the sweet and savory treats to hungry Bethesda Row shoppers since 2009. Concern Mounts For Bethesda's Homeless As Temperatures Plummet

Extreme cold this week poses dangerous conditions for those living on the street.

When Bethesda Cares closed for the evening Tuesday, executive director Sue Kirk said some of the group's clients were headed out to spend the night on the street despite frigid temperatures. The group provides services for the area's homeless, some of whom have lived on the street for years. During the day, the group is providing hot lunches, coffee and hot water to their clients as the Washington region experiences extreme cold this week. Though shelter beds were available in Montgomery County, Kirk said many Bethesda Cares clients didn't plan on using them Tuesday night. With overnight temperatures expected to drop 10-15 degrees with wind chills of -5 to 5 degrees, Kirk expressed concern for those who would brave the elements. "It’s …

Winter's First Hypothermia Death; MD Officials Urge Caution

State officials released tips for avoiding cold-related illnesses, following a hypothermia-related death in Frederick County earlier this month.

State health officials on Thursday confirmed Maryland's first hypothermia-related death of the winter, and took the opportunity to remind residents how to protect themselves. State officials said the death of a Frederick County man aged 65 or older was confirmed sometime between Dec. 18 and 24. The release said no further information on the man would be released for privacy reasons. By this time in 2011, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the Thursday release from state officials, Maryland had recorded one hypothermia-related death, and 15 for all of last winter.
