Contested Residential Building Proposal Goes Before Planning Board

Neighbors say the traffic added by a seven-story building on West Lane would render Montgomery Lane unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists.

A plan for a residential building near Montgomery Lane that's been hotly contested by downtown Bethesda residents is set to go before the Montgomery County Planning Board Thursday afternoon. Residents who live near the proposed building at 4831 West Ln. have filed more than 100 pages of correspondence with planning staff opposing the seven-story, 120-unit proposed apartment building, The Gazette reports. The community supported a previous plan that would have brought 48 residential units to the site, said Jon Weintraub, chair of the Downtown Bethesda Condo Association. But with 117 underground parking spaces, the added traffic from the new proposed structure would gridlock Montgomery Lane and render it unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians, …

Police: Downtown Bethesda Attempted Robberies Likely Related

Five suspects wore ski masks as they attacked one of the victims, according to police.

Two attempted robberies in downtown Bethesda during the weekend of Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 are likely related, according to a Montgomery County police recent crime summary. In each case, a group of men assaulted and attempted to rob a male victim during nighttime or early morning hours, Montgomery County Police second district commander Capt. David Falcinelli told Patch this month. In one case, the assailants were wearing ski masks, according to the summary. Neither of the victims reported the incident to police, Falcinelli said. Nine-Story Office Building to Break Ground on East-West Highway

Office building is planned for the site of the former McDonald's.

Local leaders are set to participate in the groundbreaking of a nine-story, 220,000 square foot office building at 4500 East-West Highway Thursday morning. The building is planned for the site of the former McDonald's. A new McDonald's is planned as part of the retail element of the building, which is being developed by Carr Properties and is expected to come online in the summer of 2014. The office building, which will be LEED Platinum certified, will also feature 13,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, below-grade parking, a fitness facility, a conference center and a 4,500 square-foot rooftop terrace. Maybe Wheaton can inquire what Bethesda did to get 55 restaurants to their Taste? Wheaton does not need to be Betehsda, but our Taste has decreased in size greatly over the years and I'd hate to see it go altogether. I appreciate the restaurants that serve at the Tate of Wheaton, but I'm not sure if we had even 1 new restaurant this year. We certainly haven't had 5 new participating restaurants …   more ›

Restaurants Gear Up For Taste Of Bethesda

The 23rd annual food frenzy is set to take over the Woodmont Triangle Saturday.

Bethesda restaurants are busy whipping up their signature dishes to feed the hungry crowds that will descend on the Woodmont Triangle Saturday during the 23rd annual Taste of Bethesda. Produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Taste of Bethesda draws in more than 40,000 every year. Event-goers can sample food from more than 55 restaurants while enjoying five stages of live entertainment during the highly anticipated annual event. “It’s a really fun day, and since it’s been going on for 23 years, it has a great following,” said Stephanie Coppula, BUP Director of Marketing and Communications.
