Deviled eggs can be even more delightful with a few twists.
Like other religious and cultural celebrations we share with family and friends, Easter brings people together for special meals. My memories of that Sunday remind me that we were among the fortunate children. We had Easter baskets filled with decorated eggs, candy and an Easter Bunny waiting for us after church. The celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ also meant a spread of delicious dishes would be served at our home. My mother usually made roasted lamb, mashed potatoes and asparagus or baked ham, sweet potatoes and green beans. Whatever menu she decided on, we always had deviled eggs with Easter dinner. Easter service at Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater will take place at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The service includes a performance by the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and will be led by Brig. Gen. Charles Ray Bailey, U.S. Army deputy chief of chaplains. The service is nondenominational, free and open to the public. Gates open at 5:15 a.m., according to the cemetery. The lottery for the 2013 White House Easter Egg Roll, in its 135th year, opens Feb. 21.
The ticket raffle for the wildly popular White House Easter Egg Roll starts Feb. 21. An online lottery system will distribute thousands of tickets for the 2013 White House Easter Egg Roll. The event is open to children ages 13 and younger and their families. This year’s White House Easter Egg Roll will take place on April 1 on the South Lawn of the White House. The lottery is open at 10 a.m. on Feb. 21. Signing up for the 2013 White House Easter Egg Roll lottery is free. The deadline for lottery entries is at 10 a.m. on Feb. 25. Lottery results will be available on March 1. You will need to create a free account at recreation.gov to be able to enter the lottery when it opens. Rocklands Farm, located a little north of Potomac, is giving families the chance to raise a little spring cheer this year. Families can "rent" chicks to raise through spring and return them later in the year.
Updated Monday, April 16: A local farm is trying something a little different this year to get people interested in farming and supporting local agriculture. Rocklands Farm, near Darnestown, is renting its chicks. "We are running a special program this year to kick off our Spring farmer's market season," said AJ Minite, who works with the farm. "We are giving families an opportunity to borrow our baby chicks for two weeks around Easter time and then they can return them to the farm once they've grown up a bit." This is the first year the farm, just three years operational, has offered the program, but according to Minite interest is growing.
