It's been a long couple of days for residents along the East Coast of the United States. First, they prepared for Hurricane Sandy's arrival, amidst claims it was the "perfect storm"—filling sandbags, boarding up buildings and buying supplies over the weekend. On Monday, as Sandy approached the Northeast, the winds picked up and officials began evacuations and last-minute preparations, while businesses closed early to avoid the brunt of the superstorm. Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said the county was spared significant damage from Hurricane Sandy and the county's emergency operations and shelters would come to a close at 5 p.m. Tuesday. "News for us today is we're going back to normal operations," Leggett said from the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center in Gaithersburg. "We fared very well compared to other locations." Ten Montgomery County public schools remained without power as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Montgomery County Public Schools and offices will open on time Wednesday, Oct. 31, according to a county schools statement. County schools and administrative offices were closed on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29 and 30, due to Hurricane Sandy. "As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, there were 10 MCPS schools and buildings without power and only minor damage was reported to school facilities. MCPS is working to make sure all buildings are ready to open on time Wednesday morning," according to the statement. "If it becomes necessary to close individual schools due to power loss or storm-related damage, MCPS will communicate directly with those school communities, as well as through the media and emergency communication methods," the statement said.
There are 308,000 Maryland residents without power and there have been two storm-related deaths.

The first storm-related death was in an automobile accident Monday morning in Montgomery County. State officials originally connected a third death in Prince George's County with the storm, but county officials are no longer linking the death to the storm. Pepco "relieved" that storm did not generate as many outages as anticipated.
Hurricane Sandy left more than 10,200 Pepco customers in Montgomery County without power as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, according to Pepco's Storm Center website. In comparison, the derecho of June 29, 2012, left more than 17,000 people in Montgomery County without power for a week, Patch reported last summer. "Pepco is relieved that the storm did not generate as many outages as we had anticipated," Pepco spokesman Clay Anderson told Patch Tuesday. "In Montgomery County, we are looking at outages that are spread across the county, pretty widely dispersed," Anderson said. As Sandy moves out and the cleanup begins, the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station in Rockville will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Montgomery County announced. There will be no county trash or recycling collection on Tuesday. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to 371 calls from 5 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday, as Hurricane Sandy brought heavy rain and high winds to the region. Calls for assistance peaked between 8 - 10 p.m. Monday, when personnel responded to 156 calls, according to an MCFRS update. Around 9 p.m., rescue officials said they were handling an increase in requests for assistance with trees and wires down. "Naturally, with the wind we've had and the rain, this is to be expected," said assistant chief Scott Goldstein in a video update. The eye of Hurricane Sandy is making its way through the upper Chesapeake Bay and 280,000 Maryland residents are without power, Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday night. The storm made landfall near Cape May, New Jersey, earlier Monday night, according to meteorologist Ken Wedelski of the National Weather Service. Calls pick up for Montgomery County first responders.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue is seeing an "increased tempo" in storm-related response calls from across the county, according to a 9 p.m. video update. So far, there have been no reports of major injuries or damage, according to Bill Delaney, program manager for Community Life Safety Education and Social Media in Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services' Office of the Fire Chief. Fire and Rescue personnel have been responding to calls, including downed trees on the roadway and trees falling on homes and on wires, along with water rescues.
