Out with Straight-A Students; ES is for 'Exceptional'

Starting this fall, Montgomery County Public Schools' students in grades one through three will be graded according to a new system.

Say good-bye to straight-A students in Montgomery County's public elementary schools (grades one through three). On their next report cards, instead of receiving the traditional letter grades of A, B, C, etc., first-, second- and third-grade students at public schools in the county will receive ES, P, I or N, The Washington Post reported: Teachers mark students with an ES, P, I or N in each category to indicate how close students are to mastering what they should know by the end of the school year. ES means 'exceptional,' P means 'demonstrating proficiency,' I means 'in progress,' and N means 'not yet making progress or making minimal progress' toward meeting standards. Diffuse the Power of the Report Card

These are few ways parents can relieve stress on report card day.

Report cards for Montgomery County Public Schools will be distributed beginning Nov. 11 and some students may be asking themselves these days, "How did my friends do?" or "What will my parents think?"  While this may sound like a kid who just auditioned for a magnet progam or the spelling bee, these and similar questions are on the minds of student's in the time of year as they receive, digest and interpret their report cards.   Yes, grades are important; but do they need to cause so much anxiety?  Perhaps instead, report cards can serve less as a declaration of failure or achievement and more as a lesson in self-discovery.
