By Jennifer Kelly There is rumor that has made its way from Bethesda, Maryland to Denver – and probably beyond – in less than a week. The news affects people from three or four generations. It has traveled by Facebook and email and texts. It has been on the local news. And it is triggering emotions from panic to nostalgia. Bruce Variety is closing. According to a DC local news report, the sign went up the day after Christmas. Everything half off. The rent is just too high. Remember when Bethesda was just a small town? There was Baskin-Robbins next to the A&P, the Chinese food place, the Bethesda Crab House, and Montgomery Donuts. The following is a letter from Keith Williams, president of the Civic Association of River Falls, and Ginny Barnes, environmental chair of the West Montgomery County Citizens Association, regarding the Brickyard Road Soccer Field Project. The county executive has made several assertions in support of his plans to have soccer fields built on the Brickyard Middle School site that do not stand up to close scrutiny when the facts are laid out. We will examine just two of these assertions to show just how far off base he is. The County Executive and his staff have claimed that the terms of the 2002 Potomac Master Plan support their unilateral decision to attempt to have soccer fields built on the Brickyard Middle School site. The following is a letter from Sarah Shor regarding the Brickyard Road Soccer Field Project. County Executive Ike Leggett and members of the Montgomery County Council deserve praise for the recent creation of the Montgomery Food Council. It provides a much-needed forum to develop a more sustainable food system, promote healthy eating and support local jobs. It enhances efforts to support healthy living through community gardens and the Agricultural Reserve in the County’s northern reaches. Did the Baskin Robbins operate at the same time as the A&P? I thought Baskin Robbins opened in that location after the A&P closed and the Giant Pharmacy (RIP) opened in its place.   more ›
