Protecting Pedestrians: 25 Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Montgomery, Prince George's Since 2011

Since 2011, 25 people in the two counties have died in pedestrian accidents. Here is more information on when and where each of these accidents occurred.

More helpful would be a chart showing causation. Who was at fault? What were the pedestrians wearing. So far, the approach appears to be a scattergun approach of blaming the drivers. Today alone I observed dozens of pedestrians cutting through moving traffic.   more ›

#MoCo Online: May in Montgomery County

From a library opening to Bike to Work Day, May means things to do throughout the county.

Montgomery County used Twitter to announce happenings throughout the county in May. A news release detailed seven events, from the 22nd Annual Affordable Housing Summit on May 10 in North Bethesda to the ribbon cutting for the new Betty Ann Krahnke Children's Library in Rockville, also on May 10. Earth Day Cleanup in Silver Spring

The Department of Environmental Protection installed 23 stormwater management features in the White Oak neighborhood.

  Latest from My Green Montgomery: The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection held an Earth Day stream clean up in the White Oak neighborhood of Silver Spring. More than 50 volunteers collected 100 bags of trash and 58 tires on Saturday, April 20. They also collected metal items including U. S. Navy synchro generator. Several volunteers also installed 48 “Don’t Dump” markers on storm drain inlets around the neighborhood. Partners in the clean up, which was held in conjunction with the Anacostia Watershed Society’s Earth Day Cleanups, also included the Eyes of Paint Branch, the Department of Parks, the Bridgestone America’s Spent Tire Community Clean-up Program and community volunteers, such as the White Oak Basketball …

Leggett's State of the County Focuses on Education, Transportation

Montgomery County Executive delivered the address Wednesday in Silver Spring.

Issuing his first State of the County address in four years, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett detailed new education and development initiatives, The Washington Examiner reported. Leggett (D) hopes to promote adult-level English classes to "make it easier for English-as-a-second-language residents to master the language, enabling them to get better jobs and expand the county's tax base," according to the report. The County Executive also wants to create an after-school program to help underachieving students. The proposal would "expand the current 'Excel Beyond the Bell' program—an after-school support system available in just a few middle schools in the county—to all middle schools," according to the report. Montgomery County legislators approved Tuesday a ban of smoking on most county-owned or county-leased property.

Need a cigarette break? Better be careful where you go to have that smoke. The Montgomery County Council approved Tuesday a ban of smoking on most county-owned or county-leased property. The ban was approved with the following recommended amendments from the Health and Human Services Commission: The bill will allow the Director of Health and Human Services to designate outdoor smoking areas on certain county properties. “There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke,” Councilwoman Nancy M. Floreen (D-At large) of Garrett Park said in a statement. “We are stewards of public health.
