Montgomery County police targeted unbelted people in cars in an attempt to reduce vehicle fatalities.
Only 44 people were cited for seat belt violations during a special nighttime enforcement of seat belt laws in Montgomery County Friday, police reported. Montgomery County police, along with Rockville City police and Gaithersburg police, set out the evening of May 10 to ticket and educate drivers about new and existing seat belt laws. As of Oct. 1, 2013, all passengers in a motor vehicle will be required to wear a seat belt because of a Maryland Senate bill signed into law by Gov. Martin O'Malley this month. County police said the enforcement was spurred by data that show almost half of vehicle fatality victims from 2008 to 2012 were not wearing seat belts. Using red light and speed cameras, targeted stings and other methods, police departments and municipalities hope to prevent pedestrian-related accidents, after a number of fatalities.
Pedestrian-related accidents have seen an unfortunate increase recently, particularly in Montgomery County. There have been 14 pedestrian accidents just this year, five of which resulted in fatalities. There was even one incident in Bethesda where a car struck an infant in a stroller being pushed across a crosswalk. “We, the parents of students attending Bethesda Elementary School, are horrified by the number of traffic accidents and near-accidents in and around downtown Bethesda,” said an online petition launched by Bethesda elementary school parents. “The safety of this walkable haven is at risk.” While there haven’t been as many pedestrian-related deaths in Prince George’s County this year, College Park officials recognize that …

Police say the man stole cash and electronics from a North Bethesda business.
Montgomery County police have released images of a man they say stole cash and electronics from a North Bethesda business, and they're asking the public for help in identifying him. The man forced open the door of a locked office in the 11100 block of Rockville Pike overnight on Jan. 28 to 29, according to a Montgomery County police news release. Police say surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect. They're asking anyone who recognizes the man to call 301-657-0112. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or enter a tip online. Crime Solvers is offering a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and/or indictment in the case.

Police say a student shoved another student into a school bathroom and stole money.
Montgomery County Police say a 16-year-old Walt Whitman High School student pushed a fellow student into a school bathroom and stole his money. The incident occurred Feb. 8. According to police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti, the student and the victim, also a 16-year-old Whitman student, were walking down a school hallway around 7:44 a.m. when the boy grabbed the victim by his outer clothing and pushed him into a bathroom. Innocenti said the student searched through the victim's pockets and stole money. The student was arrested at school and brought to the Second District Police station for processing, Innocenti said. He was charged with robbery, second-degree assault and theft under $100 and was released to his guardians. The …

Police allege a 32-year-old Kensington man being treated at Suburban told an officer, “Come closer so I can take your gun and shoot you. I will kill you.”
Police say an emergency room patient at Suburban Hospital has been charged with threatening to shoot a police officer and poked him in the chest. Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti said a police officer was at the Bethesda hospital on a call around 9 p.m. Feb. 6 when an emergency room patient began yelling and threatening the officer. The patient, a 32-year-old Kensington man, allegedly told the officer, “Come closer so I can take your gun and shoot you. I will kill you.” The man then poked the officer in the chest, Innocenti said. Police restrained the man, but he was not arrested because he was being treated at the hospital, Innocenti said. A B-CC student has been charged with second-degree assault for allegedly punching a fellow student.
Police say a 16-year-old Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School student has been charged with second-degree assault for allegedly punching another student in a school stairwell. Police responded to the school at 8:11 a.m. Feb 6, according to Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti. The boy struck a 15-year-old victim in the chest with his fist, Innocenti said. The teens had been having a conversation prior to the assault, but it's not clear what they were discussing, Innocenti said. The 16-year-old suspect was charged, but wasn't arrested at school, Innocenti said.

Do you recognize this man?
Police are looking for help identifying a suspect in a December burglary of a Bethesda home. Montgomery County police Wednesday released photos—posted above—of a man believed to be responsible for the Dec. 8 burglary of a home on Hatherleigh Drive in Bethesda. The suspect entered the home through an unlocked basement window and stole small electronics, currency, documents, jewelry, gift cards and credit cards, according to a police report. Police say that when the victim’s stolen ATM card was used in Prince George’s County, detectives were able to obtain security photos of the suspect as he withdrew cash.
