Hard work and an unerring eye for design are the key to Stella Rubin's successful quilt business.
Stella Rubin, a Darnestown quilt dealer, will be one of many quilt and textile dealers who will display their wares next month on the grounds of the Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, VA. The 38th Annual Sully Quilt and Textile Show brings out thousands of quilt lovers each year. Antique and vintage quilts, new quilts and even quilt-themed jewelry will be for sale. Rubin, author of Treasure or Not: How To Compare and Value American Quilts, has been selling quilts at the show on and off for more than 30 years. This is the only local show she participates in, one that she especially enjoys as she has an opportunity to show off her new acquisitions to local clients, she said. This year the show is being held on the 10th anniversary of the Sept…

"The Lovin' Ain't Over for Women with Cancer" is a guide for women after treatment for cancer as they adjust to a new intimacy with their partners.
The number is chilling. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That means hundreds of thousands of women will be treated for the disease each year. Although treatment saves many lives, it usually has a life-altering impact. For some breast cancer survivors, dealing with the emotional scars may be far worse than dealing with the physical trauma. According to Ralph and Barbara Alterowitz, authors of The Lovin' Ain't Over for Women with Cancer and founders of The Center For Intimacy After Cancer Therapy, Inc. in Potomac, readjustment to everyday living is often difficult. Their new book takes a holistic approach to creating a good sex life for women living with cancer. "It recognizes that a strong sense of self, and good …

Members of Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church prepare baklava and maamoul, two of more than 14 desserts offered at the fall bazaar.
For many members of the Saints Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church midsummer means gearing up for the annual fall bazaar. Twenty volunteers gather during the months leading up to the bazaar to make the food that will be sold to the more than 4,000 people expected to attend. "It takes a village to prepare for the bazaar," said Madelyn Nader, who is co-chair of food along with Mary Sahouri. "Today, we are making two of the 14 traditional Middle Eastern desserts. We have already prepared spinach pies and kafta, a burger-like dish," Nader said. Sahouri's mother travels all the way from Houston to help make the deserts. Originally from Palestine, Nijmeh J. Zayed has been helping out for years. According to her daughter, she is …

Dot Procter’s afternoon show at The Art Gallery of Potomac took place although power outages left the area in the dark.
A lack of electricity on Friday evening didn’t stop local art patrons from visiting the Art Gallery of Potomac for the opening of Dot Procter’s showcase of artwork. High winds left more than 1,600 Pepco customers in the ZIP code 20854 without power on Friday evening — including a majority of businesses in Potomac Village. However, it didn’t affect Procter’s opening as guests viewed the work by lantern. Although the lack of power caused fewer guests to attend, the show displayed Procter’s colorful artwork through the darkness. Procter works primarily in acrylics on all shapes and sizes of canvas — some of which are large and square while others are narrow and long. “Color drives my art,” Procter said. Procter uses layers of colors in her …

Susan Aschenbach, Potomac sculptor, uses centuries-old methods and three simple tools to create art. She works in clay and specializes in human gestures.
Susan Aschenbach took her first art class in high school. It was a pottery class and the assignment was to make a pot. For the second assignment she made a person holding a pot. That was when she knew she wanted to sculpt people. Aschenbach minored in sculpture at the University of Maryland, but didn't actively pursue her craft until years later when her youngest child was in elementary school. “Sculpting is dirty work and you need time to get in and out of it and the sewage system in your studio has to be able to handle the waste,” she said. “Working in a home studio with small children to tend to was out of the question so I took classes at Montgomery College and anywhere else where they used live models.” Aschenbach said she is drawn to…

Brownie Bakes, a new cupcake business in Potomac, showcases savory as well as sweet treats for Super Bowl Sunday.
When planning our Super Bowl party this Sunday, hot Buffalo wings may be a staple on the menu, but for some Potomac residents, the wings will come in the form of Buffalo-spiced cupcakes topped with blue cheese. Nina Deva — the 24-year-old owner of Brownie Bakes, a local online shop featuring sweet and savory cupcakes, blondies and brownies — has a passion for baking and cupcakes and is featuring a special menu this Sunday. Her most popular cupcakes are Red Velvet, but she changes the look for special events and holidays. This Sunday, her traditional Red Velvet cupcakes will please Packers fans: They will be green, and the cream cheese frosting will be topped with yellow sprinkles. Don’t worry Steelers fans. Deva is preparing a black and …

Working in different mediums and styles, artists Inna Timokhina and Martha Lechner Spak find common ground with local art lovers.
Two local artists came together to show their work at an opening reception Saturday night at The Art Gallery of Potomac, located in the space formerly occupied by The Surrey on River Road. Martha Lechner Spak, a well-known local artist and teacher whose paintings and photography can be found in private and corporate collections, and emerging artist Inna Timokhina, born in Russia, will exhibit their works at the gallery through Feb. 20. Spak is primarily an oil painter, but is an accomplished photographer and designer of consumer goods, as well. She refers to her work as atmospheric. “I try to capture air and light from a specific moment in time, and I hope my work is soothing and livable, but not boring,” she said as she pointed to a pair …

Lauren Jaber, founder of Real Doll Makeup was voted the most popular makeup artist in the Washington, D.C., metro area by local brides on theknot.com.
You may see Lauren Jaber carrying around a black tackle box, but she is certainly not going fishing. Jaber uses the tackle box to carry around a selection of eye shadow, foundation, mascara and, of course, glitter — all staples this Montgomery County makeup artist has come to rely on. Jaber is the founder of Real Doll Makeup, which has a studio in Bethesda; however, she spends much of her time traveling around local communities — tackle box in hand — doing makeup for high school dances, local brides and partygoers. "I love helping people feel beautiful and good about themselves on their special day," Jaber said. The Knot, an online resource for brides-to-be, recently named Jaber at Real Doll Makeup as the most popular makeup artist in the …

Church members are hoping to collect ornaments sold at the church bazaar from 1960 to 1984.
The Potomac United Methodist Church has not held its annual Christmas Bazaar since 1984, but people still talk about the one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted wooden ornaments made by church members which sold at the bazaar more than 25 years ago. The church is now in the process of collecting some of the popular ornaments to display at the church for future generations. "An anonymous donor dropped off a bucket of ornaments and these became the core of the collection that is now on exhibit in a special case located in the church basement," said Michele Peterson, a parish administrator. "We are hoping to build the collection by acquiring one of each design produced." According to church records, the Christmas Bazaar began in 1961. The idea to design…

The Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department is expecting to collect about 750 toys for the National Center for Children and Families and the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program.
Firefighters from Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department take their jobs very seriously, but for a few nights during the Christmas season they are all about fun during their mission to give back to the community. The firefighters from Stations 10 in Bethesda and Station 30 in Potomac continued the 25-year-old tradition and escorted Santa around different communities in their call area —including Potomac — and collected toys for charity. Santa will continue to visit local neighborhoods through Dec. 23 to greet residents and gather toys for the National Center For Children and Families. "The folks in Potomac have been extremely generous to this program and because of the large number of gifts they donate, we are able to pass that …
