When Does the Bethesda Pool Open?

The pool will be open for recreational swim on weekends only through June 9, after which it will be open on weekdays as well.

May 25 is opening day! The Bethesda Pool (6300 Little Falls Parkway, Bethesda) will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday this Memorial Day weekend, from noon to 6 p.m. The pool is one of seven outdoor pools operated by the Montgomery County Department of Recreation. The pools are opening for the season this weekend, but they will be open for recreational swim only on weekends up until June 10, when weekday hours will start. At the Bethesda Pool, early bird lap swim hours will take place on weekdays, June 17 through Aug. 2, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Three 50-meter lap lanes will be available Aug. 5 through 16 and Aug. 21 through Sept.1, from 6 to 8:30 a.m. See the Department of Recreation website for more details about pool hours throughout the …

Injured Swimmer Leads WJ Swim Team To State Title

Walter Johnson High School senior Barry Mangold dislocated his shoulder before the championship meet, The Gazette reports.

A swimmer who dislocated his shoulder helped lead the Walter Johnson High School boys' swim team to a state title Saturday, The Gazette reports. The team took its second state win this weekend at the Class 4A/3A state championship swim meet this weekend. Despite his injury, swimmer Barry Mangold won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and helped lead his team to victory. Read the full story at The Gazette.

Churchill Swimmers and Divers Shine at State Meet

Twenty-two of the state swimming titles were won by Montgomery County students.

Winston Churchill High School swimmers put in a good showing at the Maryland 4A/3A swimming and diving championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center, Reach for the Wall reported. Twenty-two of the state titles were won by Montgomery County students. From Winston Churchill High School, the team of Steve Ge, Kevin Gu, Harrison Gu and Austin Cole broke the state record in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:27.51. "The same four boys won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:13.92," Reach for the Wall reported. Katie Ledecky Nominated for 'Golden Goggle' Awards

Vote for Bethesda's own gold medalist in USA Swimming's version of the Academy Awards.

Bethesda's own gold medalist Katie Ledecky has been nominated in the "Golden Goggle" awards. Organized by the USA Swimming Foundation, the Golden Goggles—swimming's answer to the Academy Awards—honor the top performances in American swimming. At 15, Ledecky took gold during London's Summer Olympics in the women's 800m freestyle. Ledecky, who was the youngest member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, is a sophomore at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Ledecky joins nominees including Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps, who will also vie for the coveted Golden Goggles. Rick Curl Banned From USA Swimming Following Sex Abuse Allegations

Curl added to list of USA Swimming's banned individuals after a former swimmer claimed he abused her in the 1980s.

Prominent swimming coach Rick Curl has been banned for life by USA Swimming following allegations he had a sexual relationship with a teen swimmer he coached in the 1980s, the AP reports. Curl is the founder of the well-known Curl-Burke Swim Club, which recently changed its name to the Nation’s Capital Swim Club in the wake of the allegations. According to an article in The Washington Post, the relationship began at North Bethesda's Georgetown Preparatory School in 1983, when swimmer Kelley Currin was 13 and Curl was 33. The club leased the pool there, according to the report. Currin recently came forward with the allegations. She said Curl and Currin’s family reached an agreement in 1989 under which the family would not pursue the case …

Ledecky Sails Through to Olympic Finals

Bethesda swimmer Katie Ledecky, 15, will compete for a medal in the women's 800m freestyle after winning her qualifying heat.

Bethesda native Katie Ledecky, 15, finished first in her heat and third overall in London Thursday morning during the women's 800m freestyle qualifying heats. The Olympic swimmer and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart student is the youngest member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. Ledecky swam in the third of five heats. She finished with a time of 8:23.34, in the overall results coming in just behind Briton Rebecca Adlington at 8:21.78 and Lotte Friis of Denmark at 8:21.89. Reuters captured an image of Ledecky swimming to the win in her heat. With all eyes on London during the Olympics, county residents are cheering on a few hometown athletes competing in the summer games. And Thursday morning, you’ll get the chance to root for one very talented – and very young – local swimmer. Bethesda resident and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart student Katie Ledecky, 15, is set to compete in the women’s 800m freestyle qualifying heat in London Thursday morning.
