County leadership says the Supreme Court ruling on health care affirms a trail Maryland was already blazing.
Maryland leaders have had the chance to absorb the news: The Supreme Court, in a split decision, has upheld the individual mandate that requires the purchase of insurance as a tax. The Affordable Care Act stays in effect, although opponents pledge they won't give up the fight. While Marylanders apparently have mixed feelings about the ruling, the response among Montgomery County leaders was upbeat. “Today’s decision is a huge victory for the American people,” Rep. MoCo officials want the Maryland Court of Appeals ruling overturned.
Earlier this week Montgomery County law enforcement officials called on Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a Maryland Court of Appeals decision that bars police officers from taking DNA samples from a defendant charged with a crime. Montgomery County law enforcement officials are urging Attorney General Doug Gansler to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an appeals court decision that would deny police from taking DNA from defendants arrested for crimes of violence and burglary. In a 5-2 decision, the Maryland Court of Appeals overturned a home invasion rape conviction in the case of Alonzo King v. State of Maryland. The court's decision Tuesday reversed the 2009 provision officials said helped them solve open investigations, according to a joint release from the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Montgomery County Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
