Harris Teeter In, Dunkin' Donuts Out: Bethesda's Month in Food

A roundup of the top food headlines this month in Bethesda.

February was a newsy month in the Bethesda food scene. Patch broke the news this month that Harris Teeter has signed a lease to be the grocery tenant at a new mixed-use development at 8300 Wisconsin Ave. The new grocery store is expected to open in 2015.  Also this month, we reported that Dunkin' Donuts is closing its Bethesda Avenue location after Bethesda Row management company Federal Realty did not renew their lease, which expires in May. The coffee shop has two new downtown Bethesda locations in the works. There was more news out of Friendship Heights from celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio, Bethesda favorite Persimmon re-opened with a new look, Aroma Espresso debuted at the Montgomery Mall, and the new Prohibition-style bar and grill …

Voltaggio's Lunchbox to Join Range in Chevy Chase Pavilion

Lunchbox will be the third eatery in the Chevy Chase Pavilion with a menu by celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio.

The newly-renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion is set to get a third eatery with a menu by celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio, who will open a second location of Lunchbox—a popular sandwich shop in Frederick, MD—in the Chevy Chase shopping center later this year, Washingtonian reported. "Lunchbox takes the fresh, seasonal ingredients ... and transforms them into gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts," the restaurant's website states. The Frederick location is a "casual dining venue [that] seats 30 people comfortably for lunch only," and restaurant patrons may dine in or carry out. Range Now Serving Lunch

Bryan Voltaggio's Chevy Chase restaurant now serves lunch as well as dinner, seven days a week, but reservations still are recommended for both meals.

Range isn't just a dinner destination anymore. Starting this week, Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new restaurant, which opened in the Chevy Chase Pavilion last December—is open for lunch, too. Reservations still are recommended, and may be made online at www.voltrange.com or by calling Range at 202-803-8020, according to a restaurant news statement. The lunch menu is mostly the same as the dinner menu, with the addition of a burger and a $30 set-price lunch option, according to the restaurant.  Range now is open Sundays through Thursdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., at the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion (5335 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC). Civil Cigar Lounge to Open at Chevy Chase Pavilion

The cigar lounge will be catered by the kitchens of Range, celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new restaurant at the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion.

The wait for Chevy Chase's new cigar lounge is nearly over: Civil Cigar Lounge will open in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion on Monday, Jan. 14. The 93-seat cigar lounge—"featuring plush banquette seating, leather club chairs and intimate nooks and tables"—will be adjacent to celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new Range restaurant, and Range will provide a "small plates menu" "[utilizing] all of Range's nine kitchens including the rotisserie, wood hearth, pasta station and bakery" for the lounge, according to a Civil Cigar Lounge statement. Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's newest restaurant—opened on Dec. 18 in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion. Range's menu is meat-centric, offering menu items such as potted foie gras, rabbit, scrapple, pork shanks and cheeks, beef marrow bones, veal heart, veal sweetbreads and whole roasted rabbit, "hunter style." Shellfish options include oysters, shrimp, crabs and lobster. Fish dishes include rockfish and black cod with barbecued hazelnuts. Dishes are prepared in the restaurant's open kitchen. Range's Pizza Chef Is Well-Known in DC Kitchens

Eater DC reports that the restaurant's pizza chef is Edan MacQuaid, who has made pizzas at Local 16, Graffiato, Pizzeria Orso, Red Rocks, Ardeo + Bardeo, 2Amys and Pizzeria Paradiso.

Range isn't all about meat. It's got good pizza covered, too. Eater DC reported that the restaurant's pizza chef is Edan MacQuaid, "who most recently made pies at Local 16 [1602 U St. NW, Washington, DC] and has worked in just about every popular pizza joint in town," Eater DC added. "An Eater writer spotted the cook at [Range] ... over the weekend and confirmed the move," Eater DC added. At Range, the pizza dough (like the other breads served at the restaurant) is made in-house, chefs told Patch. MacQuaid was let go from Local 16 on Nov. 17, he told The Washington Post. He wanted to open a pizzeria on 14th St. NW, DC, but didn't have the funds, The Post reported. Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new restaurant Range is sure to please meat lovers and vegetarians alike with its extensive menu and open kitchen.

Mid-December Opening Likely for Range

Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's latest restaurant—once slated to open in mid-September—likely will open in a few weeks at the Chevy Chase Pavilion.

Good news for fans of celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio: His much-anticipated new restaurant Range could be opening in just a few weeks in Friendship Heights, The Washington Post reported. While the restaurant's opening date is not yet set, patrons may reserve a spot for a "pop-in preview" on Dec. 15, 16 or 17, The Post reported. (Make reservations via the restaurant's website.) The restaurant once was scheduled to open in mid-September, but that date was pushed back to mid-November, Voltaggio’s publicist Melissa McCart told Bethesda Magazine in August.
