Um... Huh? It doesn't seem you understand what a "straw man" argument is, Dex. Please, enlighten me.

According to Gasbuddy.com, the highest-ever price for a gallon of gasoline in the Seattle-area was an average of around $4.40. That was in the summer of 2008.

Reply@Marjorie: "Your remark about the person being homeless in University Place means nothing, so what?!" Ok...
I was simply adding more information to the narrative of the police blotter report that I knew about but didn't include in the initial article since I didn't think it was relevant for the blotter. Since I was asked about the youth's circumstances, I added the detail. He moved back to Sammamish from UP because, as he told the police officer, he thought Sammamish was a safer place for someone homeless.
Finally, something else to think about. You say, "Lives are a precious gift and cannot be replaced". I would agree. Yet the incident that reflected a person in immediate mortal danger, the heroin OD victim, goes unremarked.
Thanks for the comment.

ReplyHi Joanna - Thanks for the comment. It's a fair criticism. Both are unusual and I usually try to focus the headline on what resonates with the community: Homelessness in an affluent community and a spectactular heist in a residential burglary. There's also the heroin overdose, which is apparently a growing problem on the Eastside. This week was a hard choice.
A little further information about the call: While I don't have any current information on where the homeless youth has found shelter, the other two teen adults found with him are not homeless and have listed addresses in Sammamish. The homeless youth was until recently homeless in University Place.

I'm with Connie. I am mystified by this criticism. If I had covered this as a reporter, I would have written it as a sports brief in an almost identical fashion. Perhaps Ann isn't familiar with Ms. Tan's national ranking (I think she's one of the top 100 or 200 tennis NCAA recruits in the country), let alone her state titles for singles play. So her mom is obviously involved in supporting this superb tennis star, but posts an announcement about how the whole team did, not just the top player.
How is this graceless?

Hi Marjorie,
By no means am I defending the behavior of someone who abuses alcohol or drugs. But I would strongly disagree with your concept that "people choose to be drug addicts and alcoholics". I believe that is a very dangerous association to make, just as I believe it is erroneous to assume that homeless people "choose" to live without formal shelter or housing. Addiction is typically described as an unhealthy behavior or illness in these settings, and while I'm no expert, I am aware of a great many medical professionals who treat people suffering from true addictions, substance abuse in particular.
People in both of these situations got there for a panoply of reasons, and I lack information to responsibly report what I've already presented on these two specific cases.
It is true that there are resources available for drug/alcohol addiction — but one size never fits all, which is also true for homeless folks who refuse or avoid a variety of services — a situation I am personally acquainted with.
I understand you feel passionately about homelessness and advocate for it here, and appreciate your expressions of concern on how it's reported on Sammamish-Issaquah Patch.
