On the article O'Malley: Killing Potomac Organic Farm for Soccer Fields 'Big Mistake'

ReplyGood for O'Malley. Farms in Mont. Co. are on the endangered list. Soccer fields are as common as kudzu. Kids should be given the opportunity to explore the county's outstanding natural areas, including the Potomac River.

Let's hope so! Montgomery County certainly is doing a good job, and that's in large part due to the support of the people living here. As pressures build for a second river crossing--as is inevitable--county residents have to be even more vigilant and forceful in their views.

ReplyI think that these discussions about roads, rivers, development, and the natural environment are fascinating because they really get to the heart of people's feelings about the relationship between man and nature. It's not so much about what's out there, but with people's values--what they think and believe. Second thing, an outer beltway would impact the river in a number of ways. One is the purely aesthetic one of a big bridge crossing a peaceful river. Much greater, however, are the secondary effects of pushing development into ever widening circles and changing the watershed environment from one that promotes water quality into one that stresses streams and rivers with increasingly polluted discharges.

Prof. Phelps reported the impacts of the Asiatic clam that she observed in the tidal Potomac. The UCDavis researchers found that the same clam was having a very different impact in Lake Tahoe. This is not surprising given that these two bodies of water are completely different. A creature, native or non-native, is not good or bad. Some times and places, we like it; other times and places, we don’t.

Stacey, what you write is undoubtedly true. But does this make the Potomac the most endangered river in the country? Or even the second most endangered?

ReplyGood point Ana. A lot of people think that trash in the river comes from antisocials dumping garbage bags over stream banks. Actually, the problem is often far from the river itself, where things that gets tossed or left on the ground get washed down the nearest storm drain, and so begin their journey. So it's school children, moms, dads, everyone.

I'd imagine that from a dog's point of view, that whole Seneca State Park/McKee Behers area must be a kind of heaven on earth. Lots to explore. Thanks for your feedback.
