The aspect that you're mischaracterizing is that there has been an unwillingness to spend the time or a lack of appreciation for how important an issue it is. Either of those claims are flat-out not true.

For the record, here's Mr. Driscoll's exact statement: "I know some people aren’t going to like what I’m going to say, but this is a recreation area primarily. It’s 80 percent ballfields, that sort of thing. It was designed 40 years ago to be a recreation area. It has now doubled as a nature area, and I am very proud of that. But it’s now the only recreation area that I think we have in the Village of this size that we can do this in—other than Apple Ridge field. So I kind of feel that if we have to fall on are we going to keep it as a nature preserve or are we going to keep it as a recreation area, then I would have to say we have to look this as a recreation area and not a nature area.”

MD, it seems like you're referring to the Montgomery Village Center. The Montgomery Village PLAZA is the shopping center facing Lakeforest mall, with the Trader Joe's, Wendy's and Marshalls, etc.

The shopping center does have private security, and they were on the scene last night. I think it's important to remember that this entire incident took but maybe a few seconds.

ReplyI shop there a lot, too. From what I can tell, the security detail starts at 10pm; this robbery occurred a bit before 9pm.

Police haven't issued any information on the 9/25 stabbing, but that's definitely a question we'll be asking today as MCPD makes more information available re: this shooting.
